2026 – Spring Teaser Answer
The White Chimneys pub on Abbey Street, Lower Gornal was demolished over 40 years ago. The site remained empty until this Spring.
We asked if you knew anything about the replacement building or pub.
Aldi's new Zoar Street store in Lower Gornal is scheduled to open in autumn 2026 necessitating the removal of the 1940s pharmacy belonging to J. T. Egginton Ltd. - locally called Eggintons. On the old pub site a brand new Eggintons is now open a few yards from the original.
The pub opened as the Rose and Crown around 1840. By the early 1850s the name had changed to the White Chimneys and the Cartwright family were in charge for nearly 30 years.
In 1975 the White Chimneys was showing an Ansells sign when Wilf Barratt the late Lower Gornal photographer took the photograph. The building on the far right was used as a storeroom for the next-door pharmacy.
