2020 – Summer Teaser Answer
Demolition can leave behind some tell tail fragments. Here a wall is the clue. We asked if you could name the long gone building once behind the wall.
The wall fronted the Wesley Church in Kent Street, Upper Gornal – better known as the 'Wesleyan'. It opened in 1832, the year of the first nationwide cholera epidemic. Closure in March 1970 led to the congregation moving to the close by Mount Zion Methodist in the same street. Even this was demolished and replaced by Upper Gornal Methodist Church, opened in July 1978.
Today the strip of grass behind the wall is the site of burials from the early years of the chapel's history. The Wesleyan photograph is thought to date from the 1950s.
